styleWORKS holds the first annual "Style and Substance Awards 2002" fundraising benefit honoring 6 former styleWORKS clients who have successfully moved from welfare to work. Jonathan M. Tisch, Gayle King, Kelly Ripa, Ananda Lewis, Iman, Chris Rock, Star Jones, Wanda Sykes, and Ashford & Simpson joined the festivities to honor and toast the awardees. Malaak Compton-Rock, Jonathan M. Tisch, and client honoree Jenni Smith were interviewed on WLIB radio station to promote "The Style andSubstance Awards 2002," as well as share information on welfare reform and The Welfare to Work Partnership.

Kelly Ripa congratulated styleWORKS on the success of "The Style and Substance Awards 2002" on "Live with Regis and Kelly." She also gave a special mention to client honoree Jenni Smith who received her award from Ms. Ripa.

Malaak Compton-Rock was the keynote speaker at the Making It Real Business Seminar Series in Atlanta. She spoke about styleWORKS and the importance of finding peace and balance through your professional career.

styleWORKS marks its second year of servicing women on the journey from welfare to private sector employment.

"O, The Oprah Magazine" partners styleWORKS with Neutrogena through the magazine's "Set An Example" special advertisement in the September issue. As a result, the Neutrogena Corporation created and donated 100 deluxe gift bags to be distributed to styleWORKS clients.

The television show "Extra!" airs a segment on styleWORKS.

June 2001
Malaak Compton-Rock receives the Key Award from Bailey House, a styleWORKS referring agency and a New York City-based non-profit organization that offers supportive services to people living with HIV/AIDS. Star Jones, co-host of ABC-TV's "The View," bestowed the award upon Ms. Compton-Rock at the ceremony.

Malaak Compton-Rock was honored at the Howard University Alumni Club of New York's "Honoring Excellence Reception and Program" for her work as Executive Director of styleWORKS.

May 2001
styleWORKS holds its First Annual Volunteer Appreciation Party at Empire Roller Rink in Brooklyn, NY. Along with giving out many great raffle prizes, the winner of the 70's themed costume contest, salon volunteer Jalanda James, won round-trip airfare for two to San Francisco and a two-night stay at the Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa. The styleWORKS/PEN American Center Book Group begins on April 9. The book group is open to all styleWORKS clients and will meet bi-weekly in one of our participating salons. The book for April is "Where the Heart Is" by Billie Letts.

Malaak Compton-Rock led a seminar titled "Renewing Your Spirit Through Your Professional Career" at the Expo for Today's Black Women Conference in Chicago.

Malaak Compton-Rock is chosen by "Crain's New York Business" as a "40 under 40" for her work as Executive Director of styleWORKS.

"Allure Magazine" holds a bath and beauty product drive during their Christmas party to benefit styleWORKS.

Malaak Compton-Rock, make-up artist Riqui Lawrence, and hair stylist Daia Michaels participate in a welfare-to-work conference sponsored by the Loews Hotel Chain at the Regency Hotel in New York City.

In honor of styleWORKS' first anniversary, Clairol hosts a fundraising breakfast at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. The event honors U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexis Herman and Miss Universe 1999 and Clairol Textures and Tones Mpule Kwelagobe is a special invited guest.

Malaak Compton-Rock delivers the keynote address at The Women's Alliance National Conference in Miami, FL.

styleWORKS receives its first client referral from Business Link, a New York City-based no-fee welfare to work employment referral service.

September 1999
styleWORKS receives its non-profit status and is legally established as a 501(c) 3 entity.
